A Note on the Company

A Quiet Editorial Collective, Built for Publishers Who Read Every Word.

World-Class Articles is an invite-tier content marketplace and editorial collective founded in 2017 by a former Atlantic editor and an ex-Bloomberg copy chief. We ship publish-ready, fact-checked long-form work from a roster of more than six hundred vetted writers — for teams that treat content as infrastructure, not filler.

Chapter I · The Founders

A Letter from the Editors — Maeve Donnelly & Tomas Reinhardt, 2017.

We started World-Class Articles in 2017 from a desk above a coffee shop on West 23rd Street, with a shared frustration and a small seed check. The frustration was this: the long-form work being shipped to publishers across the open marketplace was getting thinner by the quarter, edited by people who had never held a masthead, and priced as if commodity were a feature.

Maeve had spent eight years editing at The Atlantic, the last two running the ideas desk. Tomas had been the copy chief at Bloomberg, where he led the rewrite on more breaking-news leads than he could count. Between us, we had sat across from hundreds of writers, asked thousands of questions in editorial meetings, and watched — with some embarrassment, on behalf of the industry — as the bar for what counted as a "publish-ready" article fell to whatever a sub-contractor could produce by Friday.

So we built a different kind of roster. We accepted one-point-five percent of the forty-one thousand writers who have applied since 2017. We hired an in-house editorial team of nine — every one of them with prior masthead experience at publications like The Economist, Reuters, and Wired. We wrote a 12-point editorial QA checklist, then wrote it again. We published a house style guide that 140 external newsrooms now adopt, in part, as their own.

We did not set out to become the largest content marketplace. We set out to become the one that publishers, when they are being honest with themselves, would pick over their in-house desk. Seven years later, with eighteen thousand four hundred shipped pieces and a thirty-one-month average client retention, we think we are getting close. The rest of this page is the receipt.
